Consider the fact that nurses are knowledge workers; how does nursing transition from a task-completion focus to an outcomes-achievement focus?
Transitioning from Task-Oriented to Knowledge-Oriented Work
Many people become accustomed to completing tasks in their daily lives and at work, and their actions become solely task oriented. We have a task-oriented focus in the workplace as nurses. However, we have also gained a great deal of knowledge and wisdom on which to reflect in order to provide focus and care for our patients. This week’s second discussion question assumes that nurses are knowledge workers. What exactly is a knowledge worker? In essence, it is someone who transforms information into knowledge and then applies that knowledge. How does nursing transition from a task-completion to an outcomes-achievement focus? The focus of nursing is unmistakably on achieving positive patient outcomes. How do we, as nurses, shift our focus from task completion to outcome achievement? Please share your personal experiences.
