Grief is a dynamic process that most of us will experience at some point in our lives. Prior to the loss of my mother and my personal experience grief, grief was a conceptualized idea I feel much more authentic when describing and discussing the grieving process with patients. Having gone through the process, I have a better understanding of what patients and family are feeling.  The grieving processwill be ongoing and eventually will be part of life as you begin to accept its evolutionI have become much more comfortable discussing grief with patients, having gone through profound grief, as a result of the loss of loved one.  Sometimes I offer a phrase like, “I know how raw and uncomfortable this loss is now, but with your friends and family you will get through this”. It is okay to cry with and for your patients without guilt as it is part of the process, of being human. The grieving process is active, with a definite start time but the end is not at finite time, so one needs to take time as grief unfolds, it’s a bumpy ride.

To me, grief is the process of adapting to the loss of someone or something you have lost which held significance in your life. There are the classic stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, sadness, and acceptance. However, I believe that the process of learning to live without someone or something you love can take many paths and follow many patterns. Whatever path grief takes, you eventually adapt to the “new normal” while maintaining memories of whatever has been lost.

To me, grief is mourning the loss of something.  It does not always mean death, it can be loss of a relationship, friendship, or state of being.  Greif can manifest in many different forms and often times people have a hard time conceptualizing their feelings. I once read a

quote about grief that I feel explains these feelings so well. “Grief is like the ocean; it comes in waves, ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim.”  When feeling grief the only way to get through it is to acknowledge your feelings and try to keep going.  I feel that grief is something I often care witness to while working in the ICU.  Sometimes it comes out in anger, denial, and overwhelming sadness; regardless of how it is portrayed it is a very real feeling for the person experience it.
