Technology and Interprofessional Care
The current practice of healthcare has emphasized the need to incorporate interprofessional care, which has been seen as a remedy towards meeting the complex needs of healthcare. A specific technological advancement that has been credited for the improved coordination of care is the electronic health records (EHR) (Kreps, 2016). EHR importantly plays repository, messenger, orchestrator, and monitoring roles, which are crucial in coordinating care among the interprofessional teams.
In a repository role, it contains all the quality information which is needed by the healthcare providers. As a messenger, technology makes it possible to transfer information between the caregivers and other team members. It makes sure the right healthcare provider is conducting the right duty at the right time to the right patient as an orchestrator (Chase et al., 2014). As a monitor, the technology is important in the identification of the gaps for the patients. It then provides the basis for the measurement of the performance of the healthcare teams.
Also, the four elements are bridged by using electronic health records to coordinate care since it provides the needed data and makes sure it is available all the time when required. Besides, the repository function can improve the interprofessional relationship by increasing each healthcare provider (O’Malley et al. 2015). Again, the use of EHR has also been shown to help develop behaviors that make the professionals within the care setting agree on how they communicate with each other, which improves interoperability.
