1. Please describe “Something that violates a social norm or rule.” You may focus on a behavior of an individual or you may focus on the actions of a group.

2. Please describe, using your own experience, a situation in which “A person or persons to whom that violation is attached” has occurred. You may focus on a person or a group.

3. Please use an example from your own experience in which “An audience or group of persons [has] judge[d] and evaluate[d] the normative violation”

4. Please describe a situation in which “The likelihood that negative social reactions will follow [or has followed] the discovery of that violation.”

5. In the situation you described in questions #1-4, how was deviance conferred upon the act by onlookers and how was deviance not inherent in the act? In your answer, please identify the elements of situational and societal deviance described by Goode on page 6 of your textbook.

Question 2: Current Events

Whether you read the newspaper, listen to the radio, or get your news via the Internet, describe an account that is currently in the news that you believe is related to our study of deviance. The story or account may involve an attitude, a behavior, and or a condition.

First, briefly describe the story including the main players and issues.

Second, what specific attitude, behavior, or condition do you think is deviant? You don’t have to be sure of this – it is only our first week of class! – but can be something you want to pose for discussion.

Third, why do you consider the attitude, behavior, or condition deviant, and do you think most people would agree with you?

And finally, what was the outcome (if there was one) or what do you think should be the outcome (if there is not one – or if you disagree with the outcome presented in the story)?
