Your patient is a 45 year-old woman. According to the ER nurse, the woman is a carpenter who has fallen from a scaffold and injured her thoracic spine, lumbar spine, pelvis, and both femurs. The ER nurse attending to this patient is pregnant. The patient has arrived to the trauma center in the supine position. The physician in charge has requested that the patient not be moved and that all examinations be done with a portable unit and with the patient in the supine position. The physician has ordered the following examinations: bilateral femurs, thoracic spine, lumbar spine and pelvis.
You believe you have obtained all the equipment necessary for the patient’s examination. The physician is very impatient, waiting for the radiographs and you feel pressured. You suddenly realize you do not have extra lead aprons and the nurse and ER physician cannot leave the patient’s bedside.
