I believe many of us have stereotypes of what it means to grow older. For example, I believe growing old makes one wiser and mature. This is largely due to the variety of experiences older individuals have gone through. Depending on your age, growing older can come with health problems and the development of relationships. Personally, being a high school student, I believe many of my peers seek to grow old to obtain independence. However, looking through the perspective of a middle-aged person, they might see growing older as slowing down and retiring. In some way, I fear growing older. For instance, gaining responsibility, suffering from health issues, and meeting social expectations are my greatest fears of growing older. Essentially, one’s age influences their interpretation of what it means to grow older.

To begin, when I was younger, I assumed that everyone above the age of 40 was old. I was sorely mistaken!

I used to believe that being older meant that you had everything figured out. I assumed that by the time you reached the age of 30, you would have married and had children. You were entirely free to do anything you pleased. Additionally, I believed they couldn’t care less what others thought of them. I’ve always thought that older people were forgetful, unable to drive, preoccupied with job, averse to change, and narrow-minded.

However, as I discovered from reading the lesson plan, I am nearing middle age (not cool), I don’t have the same viewpoints as I did when I was younger.

I understand why I saw older people the way I did because you do your best to keep everything in balance when you’re trying to make ends meet. I’ve discovered that everyone is unique and ages differently. I’ve learnt how vital it is to care for oneself and spend time with family.

My greatest fear as I age is being diagnosed with a life-threatening illness such as cancer and being unable to spend quality time with my family.
