Sociology of Sex and Gender essay assignment

As you have been reading, culture is very important in determining who we become as women, men, or non-binary gendered people – and we get messages about gender from a lot of sources, not just parents, teachers, and other “agents of socialization” but also all sorts of cultural products we encounter in our everyday lives. For this activity, you’ll be analyzing messages about gender found in greeting cards. You have a couple of choices. You can select a category of cards – for example, baby cards, birthday cards, or anniversary cards. After you select your category, you are to select three (3) cards aimed at a female recipient and three (3) cards aimed a male recipient.

For example, if you selected birthday cards, you could have 3 designed to be sent to a girl or woman (e.g., a girl child, a sister, a mother, a female romantic partner) and 3 designed to be sent to a boy or man (e.g., a boy child, a brother, a father, a male romantic partner). Alternatively, you could focus on comparing 3 cards implying a gender with 3 that don’t. To keep the number of “variables” in your exercise down to a minimum – so you can really focus on the gender similarities and differences – you will probably want to keep the target of the cards the same (e.g., a young child, a sibling, a romantic partner). You also have a choice about where to find your cards. You could peruse the cards at a drugstore, grocery, or other store with a decent card selection or look at a website offering different sorts of cards. *Please note that online sites are just fine for this activity!* After you’ve selected your cards, take photos of them (or save images of them, if online) and have these files ready to attach to your post. Here are the questions to address:

  1. What do the cards convey about the expected (and unexpected) behavior and feelings of girls, boys, men, and/or women? The focus will vary a bit, depending on the category of cards selected, but some social norms to consider are those related to behavior, physical appearance, and emotional experience and expression. What do these patterns reflect about the way that gender is constructed in our culture? (60 points)
  2. How do the cards for girls and women compare in their design with those for boys and men (or with those not aimed at a particular gender) – for example, their color, the font, images used? What do these patterns reflect about the way that gender is constructed in our culture? (20 points)
