Socialization requires us to interact with individuals, the way we socialize has drastically changed over the past 30 years. Around the early 2000s is when technology started to become more readily available to most of the world. Over the years as we progressed with our way of interacting, the older generations had to learn how to quickly adapt. My generation grew up with technology, most teens now can easily navigate and handle most technological devices. So digital natives are already wired to handle any sort of device, that being computers, phones, video game consoles, etc, as in we can pick it up and quickly figure it out. We are accustomed to texting, calling even sending videos to our friends at any given time. This means that we can voluntarily be in contact with people at any given time, even if they are on the other side of the world.

On the other hand, digital immigrants grew up experiencing life drastically different from ours. They grew up only being able to talk to their friends at school or planned events, and at home, they did not have any sort of technology to entertain themselves with. Now they struggle with being able to figure out devices and are able to slowly navigate them. The cons to our world today is that people are starting to get addicted to their phones or just being on any sort of device at any given chance. There are now even rules to not use phones in class, or other places like mass which weren’t rules set in place years ago. There are people who are upset by how addicted most of the world seems to be with technology, and how they lack the ability to look into what is going on around them. There are still advancements made every day, and just as the younger generations have to adapt the older ones do too, just with a little more effort.

Socialization is different in the digital age because everything is mainly done over a screen in the digital age. All process of meeting someone is done over the internet. There is no social interaction in person. “Socialization is the lifelong process of social interaction through which individuals acquire a self-identity and the physical, mental and social skills needed for survival in society” (Page 2, paragraph 1). This statement is basically saying that it’s a long process of social interaction that people learn and get to survive in society, but in the digital age, it doesn’t take a long process.

“Digital natives” are people who are born into the digital age. “Digital immigrants” are people who learn how to use computers at an age during their adulthood. I think that at first there is a distinction, but as “digital immigrants” start to learn and progress, you can’t really tell that there is a distinction between “digital natives” and “digital immigrants.” What I’m trying to say is that everyone is new to computers, no one is really “born into” the digital age. It’s just that newer generations know more about how electronics are used to them because they keep up with the updates and they’re born with the electronics already made. Meanwhile, older generations are used to doing things the “old style” and it can take time for them to learn and get used to how electronics work. For example, older generations used to write letter mail and if you were to introduce email to them, they’d probably be like “What is that?” and you can explain it to them, but they’d probably prefer writing letter mails because that’s what they’ve been doing for years and that’s what they’re used to. You can’t take old habits and get rid of them that quickly. it takes time.

Socialization in the Digital Age

The digital age has had a significant impact on society and socialization. It began with the internet, mobile phones, social networking, etc. Socialization changed utterly; everything transformed to include the use of technology. Before the heavy use of technology, the primary way of socializing was by talking, mailing letters, and occasional phone calls. Then we transitioned to emails and phone calls. Now we have a variety of ways to socialize; we send text messages, social media, face time calls, etc.

One can distinguish the difference between a digital native and a digital immigrant. A digital native grew up with the heavy use of technology and can easily use it and adapt to the changes. It’s way easier for them. A digital immigrant grew up without all this technology and is foreign when it comes to it. They can sometimes understand the basics but technology changes fast, and adapting is hard. The older you are, the harder it is to understand the technology and the internet, and the younger you are, the easier it is because it’s what you’ve been around; this is not always the case, but what I’ve seen majority of the time.
