Essay requirements:

1. The social issue must be described.
   *Who or what is being impacted? Is there a historical basis? Are there power imbalances occurring? Why is this occurring?
   
2. The majority of your paper will focus on analyzing the social issue using one of the three primary sociological theories (functionalism, symbolic interactionism, or critical theory), appropriate sociological concepts and other forms of evidence (i.e. statistics & interview quotes from multiple media sources).
3. Thesis statement.
   *Please highlight your thesis statement.
4. Sources: Use a minimum of 1 academic source (peer review sources such as textbook chapters) AND a minimum of 2 mass media sources (new articles, podcasts, etc.).
   *Lecture slides do not count towards your list of sources.
5. Essay Length: 1000 -1200 words. Must be typed using size 12pt, Times New Roman font, double spaced.
6. Format: The essays should follow a standard essay format and include components such as an introduction with thesis statement, body paragraphs, conclusion. *Section headings are allowed if needed.
7. Essays should have a title page, correct spelling, punctuation/grammar, and APA citations with a works cited page. You do not need to provide an abstract.
