Over the course of this semester, you will be engaging in four critical reflections. Each of these allows you to reflect on the content you have read and apply it. All critical reflections must use sophisticated, academic arguments. You can incorporate personal experience or examples but it must be  related back to key concepts or topics we have discussed and must be supported with ideas from our class. These reflections aim to give you a chance to think critically about this class, how your readings challenge your understandings of the world, what you have learned, and how each week’s content builds or contrasts other weeks.

For your third critical reflection please choose one of the following options:

1) Pick a common illness and describe which parts of it are medically constructed, and which parts are socially constructed. Be sure to use your readings to support which aspects are socially constructed and why. If you choose this option, you will be required to create a presentation (narrated PowerPoint, Screencast lecture, Canvas video) where you are explaining the medical and social construction of an illness to a patient. Be sure to bring your bedside manner and ensure that your presentation is thorough, uses supportive concepts, and answers all the questions a potential patient might ask.

2) Explain how financial status impacts marital stability. What other factors are associated with a couple’s financial status? Draw on ideas from our discussion around poverty, class, and families. It will be required that you make a clear connection between what you learned in our section on class to describe how income relates to families above and beyond what the textbook describes. If you choose this option, you will be required to create a presentation (narrated PowerPoint, Screencast lecture, Canvas video) where you are explaining the relationship between financial status and marital ability to a community class being taught at a local YMCA targeting low-income couples. Be sure to bring your bedside manner and ensure that your presentation is thorough, uses supportive concepts, and that you draw on specific concepts that would help someone who is taking your class balance money with their marriage.

3) Assess the challenges facing higher education. Which of the ones we discussed do you think is most important to address/impacts students the most? Feel free to draw on personal or interpersonal experience for examples. In your reflection, please propose a solution to the problem and use one outside resource to help frame your argument. Please cite your sources. If you choose this option, you will be required to create a presentation (narrated PowerPoint, Screencast lecture, Canvas video) where you are outlining the issue, giving data to support the impact on students, and offering a solution to the leadership at USF. Be sure to bring your bedside manner and ensure that your presentation is thorough, uses supportive concepts, and that you draw on specific concepts that would convince the leadership at a university that they need to devote resources to this solution.
