Discussion 1 Question:
Part 4 of the primary text addresses risk management, decision making, and resource allocation. Some of the concepts addressed in these chapters are complicated and difficult to grasp. Therefore, it is important to use a methodical systems approach to evaluate where we are and where we want to go. Once we have laid out the roadmap, we need to make decisions based on the most efficient use of limited resources.

Initial Post
Assume you are a state emergency planner seeking federal funding to address a technological, terrorist, or natural hazard. Select one of the risk management models discussed in your readings, and evaluate your selected hazard to help decision makers understand the threat or hazard and determine the importance of funding your initiative. The assumption is your state has no funding to address this hazard, but the Department of Homeland Security has requested states submit projects for review. Outline the hazard and your proposal. Construct a substantive initial post using a minimum of two sources in addition to the primary text.
Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources. Use APA format to cite your sources in text as well as at the end of your post in the list of references.
Guided Response
Read your classmates’ posts. By Day 7, respond to at least two classmates. Assume that you are a senior executive in the Department of Homeland Security and you are responsible for allocating funding for readiness initiatives. You have half the funds needed to fund all the state initiatives. Prepare a response to at least two of your classmates’ proposals. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. If you fully fund one initiative, then, you must decline another. The other option is to partially fund both. Whatever you choose, you must justify your position. These are some considerations you may want to use as you prepare your responses:
- As you review your classmate’s proposal, what additional questions do you have?
- What will you use for criteria to evaluate the projects?
- How do you compare different hazards?
- Do you fully fund some projects and not others? Do you use the peanut butter approach and fund all, but just partially?
- Do you ask for a resubmission for next year?
- Do you have a list of unfunded projects for potential future funding?
Discussion question 2:
An elevator speech is an excellent way to convey your skills while networking and seeking employment. Typically, an elevator speech is a one-minute summary of who you are, why you are qualified, and what you have to offer the organization or industry. A brief sales pitch will ensure that you are prepared to discuss your career goals whenever the opportunity presents itself. Some examples of where you could use your elevator speech are at a networking event, during a job interview, or in a social setting. Read the How to Give an Elevator Pitch (With Examples) (Links to an external site.) article and design a one-minute sales pitch that is tailored toward your chosen career path. It is recommended that you utilize one of the following voice recording options to hear your elevator speech and share it with your classmates:
- Voki (Links to an external site.)
- iTalk (Links to an external site.)
- PowerPoint
- YouTube (Links to an external site.)
