- Lakevia: At my previous job, we processed small business grants out of CA and NY. So, of course, there were several regular compliances for us to follow. There were laws set in place for each state, that each applicant had to follow as well as our company. This was extremely important because we dealt with very sensitive and confidential personal, as well as financial information. We used these compliances on a daily basis and had to verify each person we spoke to, and only once verified could we provide any information pertaining to their application. There were certain codes placed on each account and according to those codes determined the flow of the call. Scripts were provided for those that had been identified as fraud. Each system used was secured with a passcode relevant to each employee to know who all had looked at the account. Training was done once a week to ensure each team was on the same page and address any new information we could or could not provide to each applicant who called in.

Professor: Great response, Lakieva! You made a great point saying that regulatory compliance is an important part of working many different settings. In healthcare, compliance gives structure and direction to processes that impact patient care. In my organization, we always stress that patient care is our top priority. However, it’s important to remember that we are still a business and there are many rules and regulations in the industry. It’s important to find the balance between providing the best patient care while remaining compliant with all rules and regulations and staying viable from a business perspective.
Lakieva and/or All: With healthcare compliance within an organization, do you feel that compliance with rules, policies, and regulations is the responsibility of ALL employees? Or, do you feel that compliance in healthcare organizations is really the responsibility of the leaders in the organization? Why?
