Q1: Do you think SEU students were better prepared than the medical students?
Study Design Recommendations
Narrowing down to focus group qualitative design was a good choice. However, it would have been better if the researchers conducted their study as a case study, specifically an exploratory case study design. According to Hollweck (2016), a case study is commonly used while studying real-world phenomena, especially those that lack pre-defined theories or where there is little information regarding the phenomenon. COVID-19 was a fresh outbreak during the study, and little was known about it and its impacts. Further, the researchers sought to answer the questions ‘how’ and ‘what’ that are the key significant elements of a case study (Baxter & Jack, 2015). Also, the researchers focused on examining a specific population of medical students from Unaizah College of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Qassim University, Saudi Arabia. Adopting a case study as a research design would have provided room to expand this population to about ten universities within KSA, assessing 60 students from each university. Such a design would have improved the sample size and increased the credibility of the outcome.

While attending online courses during the pandemic, I noted significant challenges that are somehow related to the findings of this study. Most people had not prepared for online learning and lacked adequate facilities to support this abruptly introduced learning system. For example, many students had not used zoom before the COVID-19 pandemic. Switching to zoom meetings and learning was quite a challenge. Also, switching from in-class to online learning posed a significant challenge. At first, changing to an online learning system was cumbersome and sometimes hard to follow. Also, I noted that there was a great deal of time wasted during every session before the educators had their system ready to lecture and all students were set up. There were a lot of technical issues involving setting up devices from both the lecturers’ side and students.

Q2: High-quality health care helps prevent diseases and improve quality of life. Healthy People 2030 focuses on improving healthcare quality and making sure all people get the healthcare services they need. How does Saudi Vision 2023 tackle healthcare reform?
Healthcare Reform
Healthcare reform aims to enhance the quality of care and make it more affordable to the citizens (Manchikanti et al., 2017). Hence, when healthcare is available at affordable rates, many individuals can access it, thus improving a particular area’s health. Various healthcare reforms are needed to ensure that the larger population is reached. However, before these reforms are introduced, various factors should be considered. For instance, the availability of resources, supportive visionary leadership, cooperation among providers, adequate training and education, availability of resources, and effective resource management (Manchikanti et al., 2017).
An example of a healthcare reform that can be introduced to impact the wider population is physician pay (King, 2020). This healthcare reform aims to pay physicians based on the value of care they provide and how healthy the patients are. Through this reform, the quality of care can significantly improve since accountability is enhanced among physicians (King, 2020). In addition, this reform can be made to support the physician’s obligation to provide care. Physician pay reminds physicians of their obligation to provide not just care but quality care.
Another healthcare reform that is needed to make healthcare more affordable is subsidies. These help the vulnerable population purchase healthcare insurance and not face any penalties (Shi & Stevens, 2021). An advance tax credit determines the maximum amount that individuals pay through subsidies. Therefore, enabling the most vulnerable individuals also to have access to healthcare. Subsidies can support the government’s obligation to control costs (Shi & Stevens, 2021). The government must provide affordable care to the general public. They are reminded of this obligation to control costs and make care affordable through subsidies.

Q3: For some, depriving individuals of their right to healthcare specific to provision of health insurance. Is healthcare a right or a privilege? What can individuals do to protect themselves from the possibility of being denied health insurance?
“5 Health Insurance Companies Banned for Violations,” by Arab News
Five health insurance companies were sanctioned by the Cooperative Health Insurance Council to stop their operations. The sanctions included preventing the companies from renewing their insurance documents for 180 days because of their health insurance system violations (Arab News, 2014). Some of the violations included failing to offer insurance cards to their clients and giving insurances documents before completing the necessary documentation. The companies were also accused of offering documents that violated the optimal benefit level for their clients. The violations were in contrast to the scheduled stipulations laid down by cooperative health insurance. Other violations included a lack of necessary booklets for insured clients to guide them about exemptions and benefits they are qualified for from the insurance covers. There were also notable inadequate precautionary procedures to control and regulate additional national networks (Arab News, 2014). The companies were sanctioned through the cessation of their operations for six months. They were further given strict conditions that their operation would be audited before they were permitted to start operating again. The sanctions are justifiable and adequate to ensure clients are protected from the burdens associated with the illegal actions by the identified companies.
