The assigned readings for Week 5 cover the social development of children and young adults to adapt them to the culture in which they will live.  All cultures, both collectivist and individualistic, try to shape the development of children so they grow up as adults who accept and practice the desired attitudes and norms of behavior favored by that culture.  Those who have studied the psychology of development may recall that development and maturation is a slow bio psychological process, where the human brain is not fully developed until the mid-twenties, but humans are sexually (biologically) mature enough to reproduce at half that time (Now there is a formula for trouble!).

However, cultures may vary greatly in the expectations and norms of behavior that they place on individuals at a much younger age.  For example, some collectivist cultures expect children to become full time workers in their early teens and young girls may be also be expected to become wives and mothers in their early teens or to be in polygamous marriages.  In this conference discussion you are expected to answer the following questions.

  1. Select a country that has a definite collectivist culture.  How does the social development of children and young adults in that country may differ significantly from how children are taught and socialized in the USA?
  2. Specifically, what role does education play in that country or culture, compared to in the USA?

Remember to show appropriate citations to support your comments and also respond to the comments of at least two other students.  This conference is worth five points toward your final grade.
