Also, do you think that a DSM 5 diagnosis “medicalizes” what we might sometimes see as the human condition? As counselors, we look more at a wellness framework rather than a symptom-driven/illness framework. Research the idea of medicalization and use that to inform your research.

This week you are to read and study Ch. 5 and 6. There are a few posted videos that might help clarify some aspects of these complicated diagnoses.

1. Which is the most difficult to diagnose: Trauma and Stressor Related Disorders, or Somatic Symptom and Dissociative Disorders?

2. Choose one disorder from Ch. 5 OR Ch. 6. Discuss it in terms of what causes the disorder (including biological, neurological, psychological, sociocultural connections), and the kinds of treatment and intervention that are available for the disorder.

3. How has learning about this disorder impacted you personally, and as a future counselor? (ie: your preconceived ideas about it, your understanding of the disorder now etc.).

You must use your textbook, as well as at least one other professional resource in your responses.
