Describe how the results from one of the articles (preferably a correlation) could be misinterpreted and misconstrued by a news source. What might the misleading headline be, and why would it be misleading?

The article I chose to read about was titled Consistent, Frequent TV Viewing Causes Behavior Problems from Medical News Today. While, I do see some truth to this article, the author’s explanation of the topic was misinterpreted. I disagree with the article that consistent tv causes behavior problems. There are some valid points in the article, however, I believe the journalist composing the article missed the scope of the research. The viewing of the television alone does not make a child more aggressive, or directly contribute to personality behavior traits. What does contribute, is the lack of socialization and missed cognitive behavioral milestones. When a child is put in front of a tv, the child has no further means of interacting with people, socializing, or other aspects of life that contribute to personality traits later in developmental stages, such as problem solving and conflict resolution. A child in front of a tv simply zones out and becomes encompassed in the rapid moving of electrons and colors that display onto an electronic screen to form a picture. The scenes that the child may observe may be a contributing factor, such as
taking the drama in a show for being proper response to handling situations or conflict, however the program is designed to keep viewers entertained and the child does not have the cognitive reasoning to understand the difference. Again, the overall reasoning for the later behavioral problems is not the television itself, but the lack of proper means to learn to thrive and progress through life in an appropriate manner. I am sure if another study was conducted, placing the
child in an unoccupied room without a tv being present, still lacking the model behavior of parents, and lacking the socialization opportunities, the outcome regarding the child’s behavioral personality traits would be very similar.

For my final project, the article that came to mind for this assignment was titled No Place Like Home? Availability, Opportunity, and Substance Use in Adolescence. The results of the article summarized that youths that are at risk of substance abuse come from a lack of supervision, parental guidance, and non-conformity of social norms. This article could be misinterpreted, and the reader and/or news sources could gather the impression that only youth with low supervision have a high risk of substance abuse. In reality, low supervision is a significant factor; however, all juveniles have the potential for engaging in substance abuse even in homes where the parents “rule with an iron fist”. I think a good misleading headline for this article would be “No Place Like Home? Juvenile Alcoholism Caused by Lack of Supervision. You bring up some very interesting and important points here.
What I particularly like is that you did seem to recognize that
the issue with correlation is that there is often another
variable to consider. When you see that two variables are
correlated what is often needed to explain that correlation is a
third variable. It may be that the actual cause is something
else that is associated with both variables but has its effect in
a different way for each variable.
