Use the principles to better understand a reaction you had to a particular situation or person, analyze the behavior of someone else, evaluate the dynamics of a situation, group or organization you interacted with, etc.

In this unit, we’re going to focus on one of the most destructive patterns of perception generated by the “self” in the social psychology person-environment-other person interaction process.  We necessarily have to generalize, simplify, and reach conclusions about the never-ending flow of sensory data we receive from others and our environment.  In that process we have cognitive, emotional, and behavioral reactions.  One all too common response involves negative stereotypes leading to prejudice and discrimination toward groups (e.g., racism, sexism) based on those stereotypes.  In Chapter 5, we will look at the role our attitudes (stereotypes), emotions (prejudice), and behavior (discrimination) play in this negative process and we’ll learn about the strong impact the ingroup/outgroup way of perceiving the world has on our perceptions.
