Healthcare profits, market structure, and market power: In the United States, a new type of third-party reimbursement healthcare payment plan is emerging. CDHPs aim to control costs and improve care quality by requiring consumers to make their own healthcare decisions. Consumers choose how to spend their healthcare dollars based on what is important to them. CDHPs are designed to encourage participants to join a wellness program and live a healthier lifestyle. CDHPs are classified into three types: health reimbursement accounts (HRA), flexible spending accounts (FSA), and health savings accounts (HSA).
However, there are some reservations about CDHPs. The consumer may not understand or have the education or tools to properly manage his or her own healthcare. This could have long-term consequences for the entire healthcare system and whether CDHPs can be successful for consumers, employers, physicians, and healthcare facilities, as well as insurers. Respond to the following questions about this development:
Healthcare profits, market structure, and market power
•Summarize the history of CDHPs, including when, how, and why they were created.
•Use examples to explain HSA, HRA, and FSA.
•Examine various population segments. Describe which socioeconomic groups are most likely to benefit from CDHPs.
•Explain the various types of incentives available to providers to improve efficiency in the delivery of healthcare services. Explain who is financially liable: the provider, the patient, or the CDHP.
•Offer your recommendations for patients considering a CDHP, including which types are appropriate for which patients. Include your recommendations for each, whether to accept or decline, as well as your reasoning for such recommendations.
