Professional Ethics & Standards in Counseling essay assignment

In Chapter 3 of The World of the Counselor, Neukrug (2016) discusses the concepts of morality, ethics, and law and the impact of these concepts on the counseling profession.  The author describes the work of the professional counselor as addressing “complicated” and “delicate” situations that often involve moral and ethical judgements that may or may not be congruent with legal statutes that govern practice.  Myers (2016), in her article for Counseling Today, describes one example of this incongruence from recent legislation in the State of Tennessee.

Posting Guidelines:

Students are required to make at least 3 posts to the current discussion forum.  Additional posts are encouraged.  In order to fulfill this weekly requirement, postings must be substantive and reflective.  For example, simply reporting what is stated in the course text and/or posting a response such as “I agree” or “Good point” is fine, but is not substantive enough to count toward the weekly requirement.

Postings should provide personal reactions or responses to the questions or issues being posed.  The initial post (post #1) should provide the students response the question or issue being posed.  Response posts (posts #2 and #3) should be a response to or an extension of an existing post.  Responses to existing posts must be delivered in a professional manner and be respectful of differing views and opinions regarding the topic at hand.  Within these parameters, these types of responses may affirm or refute the ideas being posited on the forum.  In the spirit of scholarship within a community of learners, postings should extend and expand the thoughts and ideas present in the existing discourse.  The discussion forum will be monitored and moderated by the instructor.  Students are encouraged to remain engaged and involved in the discussion beyond the required weekly post.  (For additional guidelines and information about professional conduct, communication, and classroom protocol, see the Additional Course Information section at the end of the course syllabus.)
