Mr. Davis’ cataract is severely affecting his sight and his independence. A cataract is when the lens of your eye becomes cloudy or foggy. The lens is behind the iris. Its job is to focus the light to help produce clear images on the retina. As shown with Mr. Davis, it can affect a person’s ability to drive or to distinguish bills. It can also make it difficult to understand facial expressions. Some other symptoms include difficulty seeing in the dark, sensitivity to bright lights, difficulty reading, seeing dulled colors, and having double vision in the affected eye. One main cause of a cataract is aging. Being 62 years old, this is most likely a reason why Mr. Davis developed one. There is less flexibility to the lens as a person ages. This makes the lens thicker and therefore less able to properly focus light and produce clear images. It can also be because of an injury when the proteins and fibers in the lens of the eye begin to break down. Some other risk factors are smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, and excessive alcohol. Cataracts do not immediately affect a person’s vision. It can take some time, but it will continue to get worse as time goes on. This is exactly why Mr. Davis’ doctor pushes for him to perform cataract surgery (Mayo Clinic, n.d.).

Not everyone with a cataract needs surgery, but if it is severely affecting your sight like it is with Mr. Davis, it should be highly considered. If surgery is not done, it can only continue to get worse if you are already experiencing symptoms that affect your everyday life. It is a safe and effective surgery. Before the surgery, your eye will be numbed. It usually takes less than an hour for the entire surgery. The surgeon makes a small cut in the eye in order to remove the cataract. A new lens is then put in the eye. It can be made of plastic, silicone, or acrylic. After that, the cut is closed. There usually are not any side effects from the surgery. However, in rare cases, there could be an eye infection, bleeding, retinal detachment, drooping eyelid, or a rise in eye pressure for a short amount of time (Seltman W. 2021).

A cataract is usually an age related condition that causes a decrease in the transparency of the lens and results in the decrease of visual clarity (Schroeder et al., 2022, p11-4d). The lens of the eye is located behind the iris and the pupil and in its normal state it is curved, flexible and clear (Schroeder et al., 2022, p11-2c).  This lens is mainly made up from water and proteins. With time these proteins break down and clump together. The accumulation of the broken down proteins causes the lens to become cloudy and negatively affects vision (Clevelandclinic,n.d). The changes in vision that a person suffering from cataracts may experience can included, blurred or cloudy vision, a halo around light, impaired vision at night, faded colors and trouble with depth perception (Reddy, 2021).

Fortunately, there are surgeries that can be preformed to help correct this condition. There are 2 different types of cataract surgeries. First is phacoemulsification or also known as small-incision cataract surgery. This requires a very small incision to be made on the side of the cornea. A small probe will be inserted into the eye and the lens will be softened, broken up, and removed by the use of ultrasonic waves. The second option of surgery is called extracapsular surgery. With this surgery a larger incision is required to be able to remove the entire lens in once piece [American Optometric Association](AOA,n.d).  After the removal of the lens an intraocular lens is then implanted through the same surgical opening (Schroeder et al., 2022, p11-2c). Cataract surgery has roughly a 90% success rate in the United States making it “one of the safest and most effective types of surgery performed” (AOA,n.d).
