Define perception and explain the link between perception and decision making?
Perception refers to how we view the world around us. It is the point of perspective we choose to apply when we attach a meaning to something. In order to have a perception one must be aware of the existence of their surroundings. Perception, therefore, involves making use of our senses to lead to judgments and conclusions on certain things. Through perception we interpret and understand the world thus it directly contribute to who we are as people in terms of our character. It also affects the attitudes and emotions we develop and express. Perception being linked to decision making stems from the fact that we are who we are because of our perceptions. We perceive something as write or wrong, we perceive what is worth pursuing or not. As we make the goals and objectives we intend to attain in life, it is our perception that guides us through the process.
Through perception we conduct personal assessment of events which inherently affects the decisions we make. These events present us with possible options and the choice depends the angle from which we perceive the matter. Thus as we interpret and evaluate the information on which we will base our decisions and choices, it is our perception that largely determines the outcome. We have to undergo a perceptual process in which we imagine and consider all the possible results and consequences before deciding. This shows a link between perception and decision making in that the former largely influences the latter. Perception influences the analysis and conclusions the decision making process arrives at.
How we perceive reality of our life is the basis on which we make our decisions. For instance a student who perceive themselves as bright may make the decision to join college after high school graduation whereas the student with talents in cooking and perceives themselves as not so bright may decide to venture into business after taking up a course so that they are registered. It is said that first impressions matter and that people should not judge a book by the cover but at an interview it all depends on the perception the interviewer has on the issue. An interviewer with the former perception may make their decision highly based on the presentation the applicants have while the latter may be more interested in the qualifications or the skills and experience they have. Perceptions also affect how we perceive a problem and the possible solutions. Problems arise when our current state does not coincide with the state we desire to attain. It is our perception that will determine if the problem should be a priority or not. It is also our perception that will determine the decision we make towards it resolution. It is our perception that will determine at what point we will no longer term the problem as such but see it as something that has been resolved.
Perception is important in decision making process right form the definition of the problem. It plays a crucial role in developing, evaluating and weighing all the alternatives before the most suitable choice is pin pointed. Whether decision making is at the personal or the organization level, perception is the primary determinant of what we decide. By drawing the meaning of what surrounds us, we interpret what will happen if we take a certain decision. It is perception that determines the reality we attach to our lives and how we receive the information surrounding us (Citeman, 2006).
