IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WORD LIMIT REQUIREMENTS:

Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.

The public health role is to control and prevent diseases and injuries and maintain the health of the population. However, to do so, public health officials must understand how these diseases are spread, such as endemic, epidemic, and pandemic, before they can control and prevent. An endemic is the prevalent incidences of a disease among a particular group of people or within a geographical area. An example would be the high prevalence rate of malaria in Nigeria at 97% of the population, causing more than 300,000 to 500,000 deaths per year (Celentano & Szklo, 2019; Dawaki et al., 2016). An epidemic is when an infectious disease spreads at a rapid rate to many people. An example is the 2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) that originated in Asia and affected 26 countries (Celentano & Szklo, 2019; World Health Organization, 2020). A Pandemic is when an infectious disease affects the population on a global spectrum. An example is the 2009 to 2010 swine flu pandemic that killed more than 500,000 people worldwide (Celentano & Szklo, 2019; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014).

A current epidemic is Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). This is an infectious disease that originated in Wuhan City province, China and has infected 37 international locations. The disease is a respiratory disease that has flu-like symptoms and result in severe pneumonia or death. There is currently no cure, but supportive care is given to patients to relieve symptoms (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). There are three levels of prevention methods that are utilized in controlling and preventing the widespread of diseases, such as primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. The primary prevention method for the COVID-19 is washing your hands frequently and wearing a mask, especially when in contact with individuals or crowded areas. The secondary prevention method is checking temperatures often and getting the COVID-19 blood test. The tertiary prevention method is going to the hospital and seek help when the blood test is positive (Celentano & Szklo, 2019; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020).
