The fundamental nursing concepts are also called the metaparadigms of nursing. They provide the framework for understanding nursing practice. The metaparadigms shape nursing education, govern how nurses approach their work and form the basis for ethics of practice.
Although the definitions for fundamental nursing concepts differ slightly depending on which theorist you subscribe to, many nursing theorists agree on the following components:
​Person​
The person is the patient, and the central focus of the work. All parts of a person, including their physical, psychological, sociological and spiritual parts, are deserving of attention and well-being.
​Environment​
The environment is the physical space in which a person receives care. It is also the energy of the space, affected by the people in it, including caregivers and family members. Ideally, the environment created for the patient is one of healing, comfort and dignity.
​Health​
Virginia Henderson, often called the Florence Nightingale of the 20th century, helped define the role of nurses by first defining health in terms of what individuals can do for themselves: breathe normally, eat and drink adequately, maintain body temperature, dress and groom the body, move voluntarily, communicate, express emotions, participate in learning and recreational activities and be able to sleep and rest.
When an individual loses the ability to do any of these things independently, the nurse is an integral part of the health care team that works to help the individual regain independent function, whenever possible.

Nursing, according to Henderson, requires head, heart and hands. Depending on the level of education you pursue, there are different entry points to the profession and a number of ways to advance. Nursing encompasses a wide variety of professional responsibilities in a number of specialty areas.
​Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA)​
Also called a certified nursing assistant (depending where the training program is located), individuals in this role provide the most

basic level of patient care. CNAs, under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), assist patients with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing and eating. They take and record vital signs. They may provide wound care, assistance in turning or transporting a patient and help with some medical procedures. CNAs may be responsible for cleaning rooms, changing linens and stocking supplies.
To become a CNA, you must have a high school diploma. CNA training programs, typically lasting four to 12 months, are available through the American Red Cross, community colleges, medical facilities and vocational/technical schools. After completing an approved training program, you must pass your state’s exam in order to work.

​Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)​
A licensed practical nurse (LPN) provides basic nursing care under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). In addition to monitoring and recording vital signs, LPNs can administer medications and insert catheters.
