The American Nurses Association (ANA) is always working to advance the nursing profession by fostering high standards of care. The association describes the principles, scope of practice, and social duty of nurses. The ANA uses the nursing process as its basis for standards of care. These standards includes assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Furthermore, the ANA states patient safety and health promotion come first with the prevention of illness and injury. Nursing is the advocacy in the care of individuals, families, and community populations.

The metaparadigm theories of nursing and ANA examines the same four basic components: person, environment, health, and nursing practice. The explanations are broad more hypothetical. The reason for this is that they are ever changing, being modified with every patient and situation throughout time. These elements are the same basic elements that Florence Nightingale addressed in her theories many years ago. As time goes on, adjustments are made with the changes in society and culture.

Nursing is simply not just a science. There is a psychosocial aspect to it as well. As we assess patients, we need to collect comprehensive data relevant to the patient’s health, situation, and environment. We use that information to incorporate good nursing practices by planning and implementing healthy patient outcomes. We need to use critical thinking skills to plan realistic goals in accordance to the patient’s lifestyle. For example, if we are doing discharge planning for patient recently diagnosed with COPD, let’s say this patient smokes 2 packs of cigarettes a day. Simply saying you need to stop isn’t good practice. We need to give this patient information on smoking cessation. We need to possibly send them home with a prescription for Chantix or a nicotine patch. We need to look who else smokes in the home. Are they going home with oxygen? We need to tell them oxygen is flammable. Where do they live? Perhaps we need to recommend air purifiers and humidifiers. We need to discuss with them triggers that could make them relapse. We might have to get a psychology consult. There is array factors that need to be addressed. This makes for good nursing by assessing the patient, examining their health, analyzing their environment, and setting realistic goals. I believe this is what the metaparadigm theory is implying.
