NUR 601 Week 1 Discussion 2: Applying Florence Nightingale’s Theory to Your Life

Florence Nightingale was a 19th century nurse that changed the entire nursing profession. Her biggest accomplishment is her innovation in infection prevention during the Crimean War. I will describe two ways that Nightingale’s theory can be applied to both hospital settings, as well as the environment overall.
Contemporary infection control is now an integral part of nursing practice. It is an essential part of creating safe environments that help to promote good healing, good health and wellbeing and good patient outcomes. (Gilbert 2020). Eliminating central-line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are at the forefront of nursing care today. In recent years, hospitals and medical institutions have decided that these serious infections are not acceptable, and changes need to be made in order to prevent them. Nightingale believed that the 5 essential points of achieving a healthful house were pure air, pure water, efficient drainage, cleanliness, and light. (McEwen et al. 2018). As nurses, and future nurse practitioners we need to educate our patients about hand washing and basic infection prevention. By using proper cleaning techniques such as washing our hands or wearing gloves when we access central lines, the rate of infection decreases. Additionally, Florence Nightingale used metrics and evidenced based practice, and encouraged others to do the same. While we remind people to wash their hands, nurses are right in front of the sick, caring for the sick, while gathering the data, assessing the evidence, and always keeping the patient at the center. (Johnson 2020). By continuing to look at data and revise proper practice and procedure guidelines for infection control, there will be better patient outcomes.
In the movie trailer, An Inconvenient Truth, by Al Gore, he discusses how global warming is having a detrimental impact on our planet. Florence Nightingale put the patient and their safety first. To address this major environmental issue, it is time that our society puts the planet first, since the planet is “sick”. We need to work together to find solutions in order to create a sustainable and healthy living environment. We can achieve this by looking back at Nightingale’s basic principles of pure air and water, efficient drainage, and more.

A patient care problem that we face is homeless patients and proper care for wounds. Homeless patients often come into the hospital, and have wounds from improper care and sanitation issues. As many people are homeless in certain areas of the country, they do not always have access to clean water or the proper dressings for wounds. Not only this, but they lack access to care such as home health aides or nursing assistants to come to their homes due to lack of insurance and lack of housing. This is a huge problem in this country because when wounds are not properly treated, it leads to infection, sepsis, and even death in these populations.
Nightingale’s theory deduced that cleanliness, fresh air, sanitation, comfort and socialization were necessary to healing (McEwen & Wills, 2019). If patients even in this day and age are unable to access those resources, they would have trouble restoring health, and be unable to cure their diseases or injuries. According to Mathewson-Chapman et al (2021), Nightingale promoted a holistic point of view, caring for the whole patient with disease prevention and health promotion at the heart of her care. This is important as we focus on the environment that can heal and promote health compared to an environment that can in turn harm us.
The YouTube video of “An Inconvenient Truth Trailer” (Lazo, 2007) related to Nightingales theories as there is a connection between health and the environment. As the holistic approach describes that if we do not take care of our environmental health and our earthly surroundings, we are hurting ourselves. Health hazards as described in the video such as pollution, and toxic emissions lead to global warming for our earth, but they can also cause long term issues in patients such as COPD and even lung cancer with long term exposure. It is important to take the holistic approach when caring for patients, as well as taking into consideration their outside variables.
