The Effective Healthcare (EHC) Program of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) provides funding to individual researchers, research institutions, and academic institutions so they can collaborate with AHRQ to conduct comparative effectiveness and effectiveness research for clinicians and patients. 1 When it comes to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of clinical disorders as well as the enhancement of health care delivery, comparative effectiveness research (CER) examines the advantages, disadvantages, and efficacy of health interventions. These mandates are accompanied by the interest of the EHC Stakeholder Group’s Ad Hoc Uncertainty Committee in advancing efficient means of informing end-users of uncertainty on health and healthcare evidence. The committee is interested in learning whether methods for communicating uncertainty maximize the possibility that audiences will comprehend it and be able to use it in their decision-making.

Three interrelated parts of this systematic review are all focused on encouraging people and healthcare professionals to make well-informed decisions about their health and care. The comparative effectiveness of communicating the evidence in various contents and forms is discussed first in order to increase the possibility that the target audience would comprehend and use it. Second, it evaluates the relative merits of various strategies for getting the word out about the evidence from those who generate it to its potential users. Third, it compares the efficacy of various strategies for informing diverse target groups about the uncertainty surrounding health and medical data.
