In nursing and healthcare settings, workplace incivility is a major concern. In nursing, knowledge of incivility and lateral violence is not uncommon. It has been around for decades and is still very much a part of nursing today. This bothers me.

I’m heartbroken for the profession I love. Uncivil workplace behaviors are rude and discourteous, with no regard for others (Phillips, Smith, MacKusick, & Whichello, 2018). This repeated act of bullying, whether verbal or silent, can result in absenteeism, low job satisfaction and morale, burnout, poor productivity, mental and physical health problems for the recipient (Phillips, et al., 2018). To ensure the safety and well-being of our nurses and, ultimately, our patients whose care may be jeopardized by workplace incivility, the nursing profession must take a consistent stand against incivility.
As a long-term nurse, I have witnessed and been the target of workplace incivility. As a new NICU nurse many years ago, I recall my department’s leadership setting an intimidating tone for new employees. There were cliques and gossiping, which resulted in low morale and fear. When caring for the precious lives of others, this is a truly sad and dangerous place to be. To provide effective care in an ICU, nurses must be able to work as a team. The ability to discuss care situations with colleagues and receive their input in a supportive, nonjudgmental manner is how nurses grow in their knowledge and expertise, eventually fine tuning their trade. When nurses face intimidation and condescending attitudes, they will doubt their ability to provide quality care and may eventually leave the department or the profession.
