Description
“Science shows you the inside of things, the parts most people never see. And once you’ve seen the inside of things, the outside of things never looks quite the same. Science raises issues that make you stop and think – issues like thymuses and parasites that make people crazy, issues like the character of self and the chemistry of fear, things like orchids and syphilis. And science gives to the world a certain symmetry that, real or not, I find pleasing.”Callahan, Gerald N.. Faith, Madness and Spontaneous Human Combustion. New York: Berkley Books, 2003.
Discussion Question 1: How has your perspective changed? How do you “think”, “feel” and “understand” differently now after the completion of this course? Will the new scientific knowledge you have gained impact your behavior or attitude? Can you see how the study of biology is related to real life?
1) Jessica: After taking this course, it’s easier to see the link between biology and everyday life. I think it’s ironic that we’re dealing with global pandemic while learning the concepts of biology, viruses, etc. Along with the course material, having the activities assignments also opened my eyes to things like carbon footprint and how we can take steps (even small ones!) to lower our individual number. This class made me care more about biology, when before I would almost just go through the motions. My view on the impact humans have, and continue to have, on our world, the environment, and animals in it, has changed. It seems they’ve done a lot more damage than I previously knew (or would like to have admitted). I do think it’s important for us to make small changes where we can, our world is already depleting, and while most people have the mindset of “oh well I won’t be around to see the negative effects”, it’s already happening, and do you want your children (and families) to grow up and have to deal with the repercussions of our own actions today? 2) Alexus: I have absolutely enjoyed learning from this class. It has made me realize the importance of life itself. Life isn’t just about us being on earth, the way it is built and the way things work is absolutely AMAZING. I honestly have to say from learning about how generous earth is to us I will be taking into consideration on how I can make a change to do my part in helping our environment.

The study of biology is basically the explanation of how the earth runs, it is very knowledgeable and I was very excited to know more about how everything is made up of tiny organisms that grow and make such big inspiring life. 3) Tess: Biology is everywhere. Most
people go days without thinking about their genetics or the system of plants and how they pollinate. People don’t even take a thought of how the food they are putting in their bodies gets broken down and created into energy. This class has made me think of these topics daily. It has even helped me in my other classes I am enrolled in. Especially about genetics. I think this class will benefit me in the future and with my degree. I really enjoyed the module about human waste and global warming because that is a VERY real topic that humans do not think about nearly enough. We should think about global warming everytime we take our trash out, everytime we are at a grocery store, and everytime we hear about our planet changing. 4) Stacy: This class has been highly informative and enjoyable! It’s truly amazing to follow the processes in nature and in all life on the planet. I immensely enjoyed reading the scientific facts behind global warming, climate change, extinction habitat loss and so many other hot topics. What I find to be an outright shame is that there are SO many people out there that still argue with the science due to either their fear of change or refusal to listen and be stubborn. I found myself to be validated by this class in my beliefs and approaches to how I live (ie Veganism, reducing carbon footprint, environmentalism, animal rights activism, etc). I also now have more facts in my mental file cabinet at the ready for high octane discussions with others.
