This account has shown Jesus as an impostor; however, in the Middle Age, Judah Maimonides and Halevi saw Jesus as a paramount preparatory figure for a futuristic catholic ethical monotheism as regards the Messianic Age. Moreover, certain contemporary Jewish thinkers have had the speculation that Jesus might have been closer to Jewish religion in a way that transcends the Gospel or Jewish accounts. This view is held by the Orthodox Jacob Emden and a reformer known as Moses Mendelssohn and it begun in the 18th century. Thus, while different factions of the Jewish religion hold varied views of Jesus, they repudiate the Christina conception that he was the Messiah.
