This week, you will write a memo in which you demonstrate your knowledge of codes of ethics relevant to the delivery of human and social services and showcase your ability to apply and comply with these codes.  As you draft your memo, imagine you are working as case manager in a behavioral health office.   Your supervisor has recently been concerned with some behaviors they have observed from employees within the office and with the fact that the office has recently brought on several new hires.  Your supervisor is hopeful that a memo briefing employees on some of the codes of ethics in human and social services will be beneficial in making sure everyone is current on these codes and compliant with them.

Memo Content and Formatting

You may have written a memo in a previous course (such as INFT124).  You can use this existing knowledge or any of the examples/templates available in Word to help you in constructing your memo.  A template is also provided in Appendix A at the end of this document.  If you choose to use this template, you should replace the prompts surrounded by [brackets] with the text required by the prompts.  For instance, you will complete the from line with your own name and remove the text that says “[Your name].”  No matter which template or example you choose to use, your memo should be formatted to include to, from, CC, date, and subject lines and a body.

The body of your memo should be used to address the following:

  • Select two major professional organizations with a code of ethics that regulates human and social services professionals. A list of possible organizations, along with weblinks, is provided below.  However, you can choose organizations that are not on this list, so long as their code of ethics pertains to the delivery of human and social services.
    • National Organization for Human Services
    • American Counseling Association
    • National Association of Social Workers
    • Clinical Social Work Association
  • Identify the two organizations whose code of ethics you will use for the basis of your memo.
  • In your own words, summarize the major themes or points that are made by each of your two chosen codes of ethics. In so doing, for each chosen code of ethics, select three of the following areas and explain the arguments made by the code of ethics in that domain.
    • Client welfare
    • Relationships between clients and human services professionals
    • Confidentiality and privacy
    • Relationships between human services professionals
    • Technology and use of social media
    • Obligations to the public/society
  • Offer at least three specific recommendations for how professionals within the office can adhere to the codes of ethics that you just summarized. Give examples to justify your rationale.
    • Here you might focus on how professionals in the office should interact with clients, handle files and other personal information, conduct themselves with one another, behave on social media, etc.
  • Conclude your memo by summarizing the crucial points about ethical behavior that employees in your office should understand.
  • Provide APA style references for the websites you consulted in examining organizations’ codes of ethics.
