Being a project manager, one must hold essential skills. Some of these skills include organization, leadership, and good communication. As mentioned by Miller (2019), the key responsibilities of a PM are initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing. And in order to get these responsibilities to work, one must be competent in the above skills. For one, communication; PM is all about communicating with the team, via emails, calls, check-ins and meetings (Miller, 2019). The status of an implementation must be communicated as well as obstacles or roadblocks, as well as the stakeholders to receive information. Then there is organization; it is important to be organized. One way of being organized is through time management. In order to ensure that a project is going as planned, keep track with timesheets, or a project software (Miller, 2019). This allows one to see the status of costs, spending etc. and lastly, there is leadership. Leadership is always vital when working with a team. Through the right leadership skills comes along communication and organization; there three work side-by-side in completing tasks and achieving success.

Two strategies to promote a high reliability organization are (1) reluctance to simplify and (2) preoccupation with failure (Veazie et al. 2019). It is important to understand and accept that work is difficult, and there is a potential to fail in new and unexpected ways. And with failure, near misses should be looked at as ways to improve.

High-reliability organizations (HRO) include the traits of leadership commitment, processes of improvement over time, and a culture of safety. They operate in environments of high risk and complexity while avoiding catastrophes. Healthcare in hospital environments exhibits these concepts if they are “highly reliable.” Often, projects are undertaken in acute care facilities for long-range upgrades. This assumes a project manager possesses the background to lead the goals put forth by stakeholders.

Of the skills needed for a good project manager, the following are critical.

  1. Quality communicators
  2. Technical competence
  3. Critical thinkers
  4. Excellent leaders

Stephen Covey, Ph.D., the author of Principle-Centered Leadership defined relationships fostering superb leadership and followership with four principles.  They are trustworthiness (relationship with self), trust (relationship with others), managerial (getting the job done effectively), and organizational (capacity to organize other persons effectively). A culture of safety is important for the support of leaders and is the main concept good leaders provide. The four qualities listed above are directly related to Dr. Covey’s second and fourth principles contributing to a culture of organizational trust.

Skills essential for quality nursing include:

  1. Professionalism
  2. Empathy
  3. Critical thinking and creative problem solving
  4. Excellent communication ability

These skills, and others, contribute to the capacity of nurses to become project leaders in a healthcare environment. Personally, I experienced a project leader in the health profession of dentistry. As a contract dentist in the Indian Health Service, Sells IHS district in southern Arizona, I contributed concepts to the ranking Naval IHS officer as he planned the project of a new, modern dental office. This required input from non-dentists, our team members, and dental manufacturers. Financial input was provided by the U. S. government and the local Indian tribes. This was complex and needed coordination with numerous stakeholders from very different backgrounds. Our leader had the capacity to keep the project on track despite delays and the need for revisions in many details. We opened the new dental clinic about 12 months after the intended goal and provided services to the local population as required. The leader/manager received a lot of thanks from all of us.

The strategies of providing a psychologically safe space and high-quality verbal and written communication process along with knowledge of the project details are needed for reaching a high-quality organization. We witnessed this as the Sells area dental office welcomed patients for treatment.
