This is a great topic and one that my organization fails at miserably. A person (or more) from each department should be considered both at the higher level of director or executive leadership and one at a lower level. The departments that should be considered could be a compliance and outcomes officer, quality assurance, finance, IT, Clinical directors and staff, physicians, and front-line staff such as medical assistants and front office. Clinical staff play an important part of the clinical workflow. Ultimately, they are the ones who will be using the EHR and should have an opinion or thoughts on the new system. I have seen it over and over again in meetings where new development happens and what is designed is designed by administrative staff and then becomes part of a clinical process that clinical staff were not involved and had no clue it was coming. I have worked with clinical staff directly and asking for their input has given me ideas for better design in development even by just walking through the process. I have been part of the discussion of enhancements or upgrades to newer content for the EHR and have felt left out. I am a programmer and have no authority, even though I deal with the data and can give an analysis of how we can improve it and what tools we can adapt to make it better, but admins seem to think their ideas are better and that is what goes. Very unfortunate when leadership does not see the potential. This is a great topic and one that my organization fails at miserably.
