Healthy Diet Discussion

Teaching children to eat a healthy diet is a challenge on many fronts. Children can be notoriously fussy about what they will and will not eat. Since children cannot shop or prepare their own food on a regular basis, they are dependent on adults to set a good example. Public schools should be at the height of setting this example. However, many schools fail to provide appropriate, nutritionally balanced foods children often need.

For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources. Think about the nutritional needs of school-age children and access a school lunch menu from your community. Use the School Lunch Checklist provided in this week’s Learning Resources to analyze the nutritional value of the menu and consider what recommendations you might make to improve the menu.

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Review Chapters 14 and 15 of Nutrition and You Consider the unique nutritional needs during infancy and childhood.
• Read the Briefel, Crepinsek, Cabili, Wilson, and Gleason (2009) article and consider the nutritional value of food that children eat in public school cafeterias.
• Read the article by Han, Lawlor, and Kim (2010) as well as the CDC’s article on childhood obesity in your Learning Resources. Think about factors causing childhood obesity.
• Obtain a copy of your local school’s lunch menu (usually available on the school’s website).
• Using the School Lunch Checklist, complete an analysis of the school’s lunches for 3 days. Compare and contrast the scores for each of the days chosen.
• Draft a letter directed to the PTA or local health district advisory board summarizing your analysis and make recommendations for a nutritional lunch menu.
