It is crucial for health care organizations to recognize racism, power imbalances, entrenched majority culture biases, and the need for self-reflexivity. Racial disparities in medical care should be understood within the context of racial inequities in societal institutions. Systematic discrimination is not the aberrant behavior of a few but is often supported by institutional policies and unconscious bias based on negative stereotypes. Effectively addressing disparities in the quality of care requires improved data systems, increased regulatory vigilance, and new initiatives to appropriately train medical professionals and recruit more providers from disadvantaged minority backgrounds. Identifying and implementing effective strategies to eliminate racial inequities in health status and medical care should be made a national priority (Williams & Rucker, 2020). Depending on how a health care organization recognizes these factors, can ultimately impact the treatment that a patient receives. For example, health care providers who do not work to create a better power balance run the risk of harming shared decision-making. Patients who do not feel invited to the decision-making process or feel inferior to the provider are less likely to participate in treatment decisions than patients who feel welcome (Heath, 2018).

I believe that specific programs need to be developed to address these issues, however I don’t feel that we should attempt to treat all entities as if these differences did not exist. By acting like these differences did not exist would cause controversial issues relating to the organization not caring enough about them to address them. To help with this, cultural awareness training for health care professionals is now commonplace across a variety of sectors. Its popularity has spawned several alternatives (cultural competence, cultural safety, cultural humility, cultural intelligence) and overlapping derivatives (diversity training, anti-racism training, micro-aggression training). The ever-increasing reach of cultural awareness initiatives in health settings has been implemented to improve cross-cultural clinical encounters and patient outcomes with the broader expectation of reducing health disparities (Shepherd, 2019).
