The selected health policy is Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The policy is a public law 104-191. The act was enacted on 21st of August, 1996. The policy focuses more on the secrecy and privacy of information relating to personal healthcare records. This policy in this case is relating to the privacy of healthcare information relating to adolescents. Under this policy, it is required that the secretary of HHS should publicize the standards in electronic exchange health information, privacy as well as its secrecy.
The current status of HIPAA is that, all health plans as well as health care providers under the policy must comply with all the requirements presented under the policy. This became effective from 14th of April, 2003. For the first time in history, the policy introduced national standards, aiming at protecting the medical record as well as personal health information of individuals. Not even their parents should get access to the information, unless in situations where there is no any other option. Adolescents are naive and face a lot of health challenges as they grow. There is need to protect their information, so as to ensure that they seek healthcare services without fear. My recommendations will be that; healthcare records and other health information relating to adolescents must be kept in private. Again, any person found guilty of disclosing such information must meet the full wrath of the law. Lastly, the adolescents should be guaranteed that their health record information is secured by the policy (Baheiraei et al. 2014).

Healthcare industry faces various issues, especially in relation to the privacy of the individuals’ health records and information. Disclosing such information to third parties may hinder people from seeking medical advice when they face challenges. Adolescents are highly concerned with their privacy, hence need to protect their health records. To effect such privacy, there is need to have a policy that stipulates what has to be done. Legislators need to have adequate knowledge relating to the health issue to be addressed, as well as the proposed expectations in order to come up with effective rules of addressing the issue.
