Scenario
You have been working as part of a public health team that teaches grade school children about healthy food choices in an afterschool program. Each day thirty children regularly attend your program after school for 3 hours. They are all fluent in English, but they are all also from single parent homes where English is a second language. Their parents can all communicate in English, but the language does not come easily to them. All of the adults are hard workers, most holding at least two jobs.

Your program is unique, in that you are teaching the children to grow portable/small space vegetable gardens. They then share, prepare, and take produce and simple recipes home to share with their families. Your group has teamed up with a local food pantry, who often provides various canned goods and grains to create unique recipes.
Next month, you are hosting the group’s first family education night. The goal is to help the children demonstrate what they’ve learned to their parents, as well as engage the parents in healthy, low-cost meal planning.
