HCS 529 WEEK 2: Community Need for Ambulatory Surgical Centers

HCS 529 WEEK 2 Community Need for Ambulatory Surgical Centers

Community Need for Ambulatory Surgical Centers – As a learning team, research two existing urban ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) and an existing rural ambulatory surgical center. These ASCs should be in different locations. As you research these facility settings, consider the following:

  • Services offered
  • Community needs
  • Community size

Create an 8- to 10-slide voice-over Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation to respond to the following prompts based on the facilities you researched. Your team can create a voice-over presentation using Microsoft® PowerPoint® or another program such as Prezi® or similar.

  • Explain whether each of the three areas could use an additional ASC.
    • Consider using an online map of the areas to review the different facilities offered in the area.
  • Describe whether the addition of each ASC would be considered saturation of facilities or appropriate for the area.
  • Explain what indicators should be used to decide if these areas could use an ASC.

HCS 529 WEEK 2 Renovating an Ambulatory Surgical Center

In your current role as a health care manager, you have been asked to participate in the renovation of an ambulatory surgical center in Mesa, Arizona. The facility was previously used as an office space.

Part 1:

Access the SmartDraw® Program to open and save the HCS/529 Custom Layout. You will continue to use the custom office space layout during Week Three and Week Four.

  • Tutorials have been provided for you to practice navigating the program.
    • Accessing SmartDraw® on ToolWire
    • Loading the HCS/529 Custom Layout
    • Exploring SmartDraw®
    • Practicing Facility Design
    • Submitting Your Design

Use the Space Planning Excel® Spreadsheet as a guide for renovating your floor plan. You will be responsible for including all spaces within the business section of the spreadsheet whereas the clinical side is considered optional. When renovating your floor plan, remember to research and incorporate current best practices, evidence-based design principles, and other concepts you learned in this course.

Note: It will be important to work on your design each week. This design is due in Week Four.

Part 2:

When considering renovating an existing structure, there are many things to consider. Review some of the items that need to be compliant prior to the purchase. The office space meets all utility requirements, including 24-hour backup power and appropriately sized medical gas supply. The area that will be designated as a patient pick-up has an existing canopy. You will use the City of Mesa Planning Department website as reference to complete this assignment.

Write a 750- to 1,000-word paper in response to the following:

  • The office space is currently zoned as a business occupancy.
    • Identify if this building is the appropriately zoned building type for ASC in Mesa, Arizona.
    • Explain how you know the building is zoned appropriately.
  • The office space meets all parking requirements found on the Mesa Zoning Ordinance. In some cases, office spaces or other facilities that are being converted may not have the required parking spaces.
    • Describe at least two alternatives you would suggest to correct parking issues if your office space was not compliant.
  • The office space sits off the main road behind some other buildings.
    • As you think about your patient population, what are two pros and two cons of having a building that is not as visible from the main road?
  • As you begin work on this multi-week project, it will be important to develop a plan to keep you on track. Among other tasks you will complete in this project, remember to research the layout of your floor plan, proximity of space within your building, and flow for your different users (providers, patients, support staff, visitors, and family).
    • Create a Gantt chart that details your project tasks and timelines for the work to be completed in SmartDraw®.
    • List resources you will use as you start this project.

Complete your building renovation using SmartDraw®.

Submit your design to your faculty member following the Saving Your SmartDraw® Design instructions.

Part 2:

This week you will create a voice-over Microsoft® PowerPoint® that will summarize your renovation for your stakeholders.

Create a 12- to 15-slide voice-over Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation of your project that includes the following information:

  • Identify stakeholders that would need to be involved in this project.
    • What role do these stakeholders plan in this project?
  • Explain your design choice.
    • What was your rationale for your design choice?
  • Explain your planning needs during this renovation.
  • Explain your planning goal during this renovation.
  • Describe high-level changes you made to your building.
  • Provide a cost estimates for the operation room (OR) in your facility.
    • Provide a chart containing each item in the room, the items’ estimated cost, and a total for the items in the OR.
  • Explain how you would handle the budget planning when it does not meet the original budget.
  • Describe what you learned from completing your own floor plan
    • What would you do differently next time you renovate this type of building?

HCS 529 WEEK 2 Letter to Stakeholders

Imagine that you feel strongly that you should use evidence-based design for your building or renovation project, but many of your stakeholders are unsure about this approach, mostly because of lack of knowledge about this issue. You decide to write a letter to them that explains evidence-based design and giving them perspective on how it fits into the changing landscape of health care facility planning and design.

Write a 750- to 1,050-word letter to your stakeholders in which you do the following:

  • Summarize the history of health care facility design. Emphasize major changes and approaches.
  • Describe the use of evidence-based design in health care facility planning.
  • Explain why you believe that evidence-based design is important for your specific facility project.

HCS 529 WEEK 5 Constructive Feedback on Presentation and Design

When designing facilities, there are many stakeholders that will be affected by the design of the facility. It is important to understand that each of the stakeholders will have a unique perspective of the facility based on their role.

Imagine you are a stakeholder who will use the facility that was presented by your selected learning team member (i.e., nurse, physician, and patient, family member of patient, or janitorial staff).

While you are reviewing this facility, you will need to consider how the stakeholder’s perspective you selected may be different from another stakeholder such as physician versus a patient. It is important to consider the stakeholder’s role and use of the facility such as who they interact with, functions they perform, and departments they interact with.

Review the voice-over presentation and the SmartDraw® design of the team member you have selected.

If you have questions regarding the presentation and design, contact the team member, using email or discussion area, to discuss the question with them. Keep detailed notes of the questions you asked your team member and their responses to include in your submission this week.

During your review, complete the tables provided.

  • Identify the stakeholder’s role you have selected to use during your review.
  • Table 1 will provide your team member with constructive feedback regarding the perspective of the stakeholder you selected to use as you review the facility.
  • Table 2 will organize your constructive feedback on the organization and mechanics of their presentation. The team member will review and utilize your feedback in their Week Six assignment.

Consider the following as you complete this assignment.

  • When providing feedback, make sure to inform your team member about why you are providing this type of feedback. Whether it is positive or negative feedback, the why is always important.
    • See the examples provided on the worksheet.
    • Several cells have been provided for your feedback, but please feel free to add more cells if necessary.
    • An area for notes has also been provided under the tables. Use this area to record questions you asked the team member or additional thoughts you have during your review.

Click the Assignment Files tab to submit your assignment to your faculty for grading.

Email your completed worksheet to your learning team member so they can complete their Week Six assignment.

HCS 529 WEEK 6 Incorporating Feedback for Final Presentation and Design

During this week, you will review and possibly incorporate the feedback from the team member who reviewed your final project. You will use your team member’s feedback as well as your faculty’s feedback from Week Four to make corrections or adjustments to your final project. This week you will complete a feedback and summary form that will detail any corrections or adjustments you made based on the feedback from your faculty and team member.  You will also turn in your final presentation and design again to be reviewed with your feedback and summary form. Remember that it is ultimately your decision to incorporate feedback from your learning team member and your faculty; however, if you decide not to incorporate feedback, you need to explain why you did not.

Incorporate the necessary changes recommended by your learning team member and your faculty into your presentation and SmartDraw® Design.

Complete the Feedback and Summary Form.
