Key identifiers used in healthcare to determine quality:

1) mortality-  refers to the number of deaths that have occurred due to a specific illness or condition

2) patient safety- Patient Safety is a health care discipline that emerged with the evolving complexity in health care systems and the resulting rise of patient harm in health care facilities. It aims to prevent and reduce risks, errors and harm that occur to patients during provision of health care. A cornerstone of the discipline is continuous improvement based on learning from errors and adverse events.

3) Effectiveness of Care- Effectiveness is doing “the right” things, for example setting right targets to achieve an overall goal (the effect).

4) Timeliness of Care- Timeliness in health care is the system’s capacity to provide care quickly after a need is recognized. Timely delivery of appropriate care can help reduce mortality and morbidity for chronic conditions.

These are just a few of the key identifiers. The one I feel is most important would be patient safety. Without proper patient safety everyone is at risk. The patient is at risk for treatment and the facility is at risk for not following proper protocol to ensure patient safety. Protecting all confidential patient information is apart of patient safety as well and decrease the chances of medical errors and treatment.

According to the library readings, Sollecito, W.A. & Johnson, J.K. (2013). McLaughlin and Kaluzny’s Continuous Quality Improvement in Health Care (4th ed.). Sudbury, MA: Jones and Bartlett: “Quality has been studied by pioneers in the field for many years yet has gained significant attention and practical application in organizations in the United States only in the past 40 years. Because quality is relative to the person experiencing it, a single definition of quality for a particular product or service is elusive. Many have tried to define quality, and organizations struggle to meet a multitude of definitions of quality. A few definitions of quality have emerged to broadly define the essence of quality”.
