Different Theories: Deontology is the Best Approach

If it was possible to combine all the ideas of these three theories (Egoism, Utilitarianism), it will be great. All these theories have benefits and as well as disadvantages. Some of these benefits can could help certain situations. Although egoism is based on self interest, not all the time but Selfishness is sometimes good. At times, being selfish is what one needs to be to survive. Since the beginning of mankind, it is what humans have practiced in order to survive or to have their genes passed on. One disadvantage is that sometimes what is in our best interest is not the best decision. For example, a selfish individual may never give to charity but may spend money on something they may not need.

Utilitarianism is the idea no moral act or rule is intrinsically right or wrong. Thus, decisions one makes is based on the greater good not. In other words, what decision that is made whether it morally good or bad, it is good as long as the outcome benefits many people. For example, some prescription medications do not benefits some (severe side effects) but since it has been determined to help many others it is good. Other problem is punishing an innocent person because it is for the greater good. There are times that Utilitarianism maybe for the greater good . For example, speed limit signs helps saves lives of many by reducing accidents.

Deontology helps one to understand the consequences of their actions. It idea that consequences as result of something helps us find what our duty is and not what make something our duty. One benefit may be promising a a relative that you will not forget their birthday. According to this doctrine, one ought to keep their promises. A problem with this theory is that, it does not take into account the reasons for such behavior. For example, In the case of one forgetting their relative’s birthday, It could be that their were circumstances that prevented them for keeping their promise. Overrall all these theories are neither bad nor good. Its application is dependent on case by case basics. But I will more than likely choose Deontology because of its reliability.
