Research methodology embodies specific techniques or procedures that a researcher uses to identify, choose, process and analyze data about a certain phenomenon of interest. The main topic of the study was to investigate the inner perspective of patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) disorder. This was a qualitative study in which the researcher used ethnographic research design in trying to address the research problem. Patients were asked to write letters describing what their disorder represented and meant to them. The letters/data were collected for period of about 2 years from 31 July 2010 to 31 May 2012 (Marzola et al., 2015). The patients completed the task in the first week after being admitted in order to avoid any bias. Participants who met a structured clinical interview for DSM axis-I disorders were included in the study based on gender and age. In this regard, only female participants between 18- 40 years of age participated in the study. A coding scheme was used to evaluate the patient’s letters based on 10 pro-codes (for which patients viewed AN as positive) and 13 anti-codes (for which patients viewed AN as negative). SPSS software was used in conducting the data analysis by first displaying the descriptive statistics and then performing a 2-step cluster analysis to examine any possible associations across various themes.
The researchers cited research findings that suggested that a central role for emotional dysregulation in AN disorder which encompasses emotion recognition, emotional awareness, and behavioral regulation when one experiences strong emotions (Marzola et al., 2015). Such issues may explain why patients tend to value their disorder and show reluctance in embracing treatment. Other studies also found a reluctance to embrace treatment as the hallmark for AN which entails related impact on course and outcome and both positive values and defensive functions of AN huge underpin the issue (Gregertsen, Mandy & Serpell, 2017).
