Structure and Function of the Support Group

As can be seen in the organizational structure, the support group consists of a group facilitator, communication supervisor, and the support group coordinator.

The primary role of the group leader is to facilitate the support group meetings.

The primary function of the breast cancer survivor support group is to offer an ideal platform for breast cancer survivors to share fears and feelings about their cancer journey.

The support group also restores hope and confidence, particularly for those that have undergone mastectomy and are finding it hard to regain their self-esteem.

The group also offers an ideal platform that breast cancer survivors can gain better self-understanding of themselves, and as such, have coping skills for difficult situations.

Ultimately, the support group also offers learning experience for breast cancer survivors in relation to healthy living through the dissemination of knowledge among group members as well learning resources.

Diversity and Culture

To ensure that the support group is diverse, the first strategy that will be put in place will be open membership for all regardless of age, ethnic background, religion, educational background, and language.

Group members will also be expected to articulate how their culture perceived breast cancer. This will ensure that cultural differences will be incorporated within the group.

To ensure that every group member became actively involved in the group, the 4 E’s model was utilized.

Engage: Group members will be explained to how the support group will make the world a better place.

Educate: Group members will be informed the things they need to know in order to prevent breast cancer recurrence,

Execute: Group members will be required to respond on what they needed to do based on the available resources and culture to prevent breast cancer relapse.

Evaluate: Group members will be expected to respond whether or not they have acquired the knowledge and skills needed to ensure the prevention of breast cancer relapse (Linnenbrink-Garcia, 2015).

Other than communication, another crucial aspect of group dynamics is leadership. Hence, assessment will be undertaken to establish whether there is lack of direction, focus on wrong priorities, and infighting all of which are suggestive of weak leadership (Franz, 2012).
