You will work with a variety of people with varying leadership styles throughout your career. As a nurse leader, it is critical that you communicate effectively and get along with those whose leadership style differs from yours. Understanding your own leadership style can also provide insight into how others perceive you and what skills you may need to develop as your leadership responsibilities grow.
To get ready:
Examine the learning resources, including the leadership styles identified in Chapter 2 of the course text.
Consider a leader in your organization or one you are familiar with. Is his or her demeanor authoritative, democratic, or laissez-faire? Why?
Which of this person’s characteristics or approaches would you incorporate into your own leadership style? Which ones would you rather not include?
Consider how this leader’s style and the interactions that result may affect health care quality and patient outcomes.
