Background Information
Our patients’ culture affects how they will interact with us verbally and non-verbally. It also can affect how healthcare decisions are made, how patients view their illness, how they feel their illness should be treated, their preferred meal choices, and how they react to pain. It can also determine the number of visitors they would like to have visit.

Spiritual factors also play a role in healthcare. According to Anandarajah and Hight (2001), “Up to 77 percent of patients would like spiritual issues considered as part of their medical care, yet only 10 to 20 percent of physicians discuss these issues with their patients” (p. 81). According to Williams, Meltzer, Arora, Chung, and Curtain (2010), “patients who reported having discussed spiritual issues with someone while in the hospital were significantly more likely to give superior ratings on all four satisfaction measures, regardless of whether or not they had desired such a discussion with regard to their healthcare” (p. 1265). In this discussion, you will consider some tools for assessing cultural, social, and spiritual factors that influence your patients as well as the vulnerable population you selected for your service-learning activity.
