1. When you were growing up, what was it like for your family in terms of having food, clothing, shelter, education, health care, and other resources? What social class would you consider yourself being raised in, has your family changed its social class, and did you ever wish you were a member of a different class? Why or why not?
2. What are some of the disadvantages to being homeless? What might some of the advantages be to being homeless? Imagine you were completely homeless with no shelter, money, food, family/friends, or phone(!) for 48 hours. You are completely alone with no ties to your current life. What would you do with your time? What/how would you eat? What about money? Shelter? Safety? How would you survive?
3. Let’s say you have just won the Powerball! You receive $75 million in cold hard cash. What would you do with the money? Your job? School? Discuss what you think might happen to your life, your relationships, your goals, your dreams, and your everyday interactions. Be specific in your responses. Would it be difficult for you to handle so much money? What problems may arise?
4. In your own words, describe the “American Dream.” What specific messages did you get from your family about achieving the American Dream? How does your own racial/ethnic identity factor into your family’s perceptions and also your own expectations of the American Dream? Are you currently pursuing the American Dream? How so, why/why not, and what will it take for you to achieve it?
5. If you could be President of the United States for ONE WEEK, what decisions/laws/choices could you make in order to help people achieve the American Dream? Would you want everyone to achieve the American Dream? Why or why not? Think of at least one specific policy or law you could create. Explain it, justify it, and use your sociological imagination!
