Applying Research to a Case Study essay assignment
Determine which case study you will use in your Final Project. (SC need to choose Case 1 or 2)
Case Study 1 _____ Case Study 2 __X___ Case Study 3 _____ Case Study 4 _____
Identify the client of focus:
Jim is a 14 year old Caucasian male. Comment by Niece: More information about the client should be provided to help describe the person you are working with. What else is known about the client? You need to go more in depth… for example, who does the client live with? What grade is client in? This is not enough information. What is the background for client? What is current living environment?

Describe the presenting problem and which mental health disorder you will address in your treatment (or action planning for school counselors):
He lost his sister and since then has been showing different behaviors. The parents thought he was coping with the loss but later discovered empty beer bottles and air cans which raised alarm to the parent. He has become an introvert since them and dormant in group activities and general school activities. He has changed his friends also and now walks with “Goths” as described by the father. Jim seems to be suffering from traumatic grief. Comment by Niece : So, are you considering grief or trauma? Both are areas of concern. Pick one and focus on that.
Name the counseling intervention that you wish to investigate for use with this client and his/her mental health disorder:
The counseling intervention I could wish to investigate for use with Jim is CBT used with commemorating. Comment by Niece : You should focus on a mental health concern… depression from grief, trauma from loss, commemorating is not a mental health concern.
Using the following guide, articulate the research question you will investigate in your Final Project:
Is (intervention) effective for treating (population) diagnosed with (mental health disorder)?
· Example: Case Study 4 (Client, Jared; Disorder, PTSD; Intervention, exposure therapy)
Is exposure therapy effective for treating combat veterans diagnosed with PTSD?
Is CBT used with commemoration effective for treating teenagers diagnosed with traumatic grief? Comment by Niece : Commemoration is not a clear counseling intervention.
Part 2: Applying Research to a Case Study
Using the Walden Library, search the professional counseling databases to identify current, peer-reviewed research articles which investigate the intervention and mental health disorder you have chosen to research. List three article citations (in APA format with links to the articles) that you have identified for use in your Final Project. Each article should adhere to the following guidelines:
· Use only peer-reviewed article published in the last 10 years.
· Include at least one quantitative and one qualitative research design.
· Do not use a meta-analysis type article.
· Include the permalink for each article.
Article 1: Counseling research: A practitioner-scholar approach. Comment by Niece : None of your articles are focused on the intervention to use with Jim. You have included articles about research which is not the focus of this assignment. Furthermore, I am the author of the 3rd article you chose and it has nothing to do with your topic. I am not sure what you are doing .. but since I am the author of that article you have completely incorrectly cited and gave credit for something that is not correct.

Authors Balkin and Kleist explain that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) used with commemoration helps address thoughts and emotions. The authors argue that this approach has its own established human thought process, which it uses to replaces the unwanted one producing symptoms of Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As pointed out in the article, the approach is practical when it comes to changing the pattern of thinking of a client. Using CBT with commemoration can be structured into different forms, making it effective in addressing personal needs. According to the authors, this structured approach is essential for the reason that different individuals have a different symptom of PTSD that has been emphasized.

Author Caruth argues that medication can be used along with the approach of using CBT with commemoration, which makes the method achieve the desired results much faster. The author points out that medications facilitate the elimination of the symptoms being experienced by an individual. In his view, incorporation of medication alongside the approach reduces the time it takes to replace an unwanted thinking pattern in a client. The author further explains that the use of CBT with commemoration is a collaborative process. What the author means by this is that the approach gives the client a chance to participate in the healing process. As pointed out in the article, performing the activities being asked by the therapist is one of the ways in which a client gets to participate in the approach. This obedience as per the article is due to the willingness to overcome the underlying mental illness on the part of the client.
Article 3: Single-subject research design for school counselors: Becoming an applied researcher.

In this particular article, authors Foster and Young explain that using CBT with commemoration does not have any form of side effects like in the case of medication approach. This, as per the authors, makes the method to be effective for the reason that the clients are never scared away. The authors argue that the side effects experienced when using the medication approach demoralizes a client from continuing with the medication. The negative impact of this as per the article is that it makes the client continue experiencing the symptoms being experienced. Use of CBT with commemoration translates to permanent elimination of the unwanted approach. The reasons as to why there is permanent elimination of the unwanted behaviors as per the authors is that the method contributes to a permanent replacement of the thinking pattern that is producing PSTD symptoms. The article points out that using CBT with commemoration takes a bit longer than medication to help a client adapt to new behavior. The approach calms down and relaxes a client from anxiety symptoms. As pointed out in the article, the anxiety symptoms experienced are usually as a result of the constant flashbacks that a client experienced. The regular flashbacks make the client worry about what the future is going to be like with respect to the event that has just taken place.
Part 3: Applying Research to a Case Study (Evidence-Based Practice)
Using the following information as a guide, develop a polished APA formatted paper. You will analyze three scholarly articles and apply the findings to your case study.
Write a brief introduction that identifies which case study, client, and mental health disorder you chose for your project. Identify the intervention you are investigating for use in evidence-based practice.
Research Question:
Insert your approved research question.

In this section, give an overall summary of the findings for all three articles you analyzed. Describe the general outcomes of what the studies found in terms of how well the intervention worked with the counseling issue disorder and population you were exploring. Answer your research question . If the topics/populations in your articles were related but do not match your research question, explain how you drew your conclusions to answer the research question. Describe how this information applies to the client in your chosen case study. Give one specific example of a counseling application of the intervention using a scenario that includes your identified client from the case study.
