A problem that can be addressed through the analysis of data at Abbott is the adoption of BinaxNOW antigen test kits by the general population for at-home use. According to Davenport and Kim, “The most important thing in the problem recognition stage is to fully understand what the problem is and why it matters”. While these rapid diagnostic test kits for COVID-19 are being implemented at schools and workplaces, I suspect that – like how some individuals may be skeptical of taking a coronavirus vaccine – some individuals will be lacking confidence in an at-home COVID-19 diagnostics test (Ioannou, 2021). To return daily life to a sense of normalcy, it is critical that we also make COVID-19 testing the norm for everyone.

The primary type of data that will need to be collected is demographic data. Who is buying/who is using the kit (successfully) at home? Demographic data is necessary to determine what populations could be targeted for education on how the at-home COVID-19 test works and how it could benefit their community. The demographic data we need could be obtained from a survey of individuals’ likeliness on a scale of 1-10 to buy and use an at-home COVID-19 test. I hypothesize that we will see lesser adoption of the BinaxNOW antigen test kit in demographics such as non-college-educated, rural areas, and impoverished areas.

The healthcare sector’s supply chain changes in the last decade produced a consistent realignment for cost containment. This also translates through a reorganization in GPO’s observed along the Canadian healthcare landscape’s care centers’ supply chain. Even more, few provinces focused their attention on consolidating their Healthcare supply chain in provincial purchasing groups. As a result, these concentrated groups’ bargaining power increased substantially (Porter E.M., 1980), which produces an increased pricing erosive power in the medical device industry competitive landscape. To break out of this high bargaining power grip, the companies must innovate to disrupt the market, either through new products or branding solutions. This is where Medtronic Integrated Health Solutions (MIHS) actively promotes a partnership opportunity to address care center process and path improvement desire, including cost containment projects.

 

What sort of data should you gather and analyze to accurately assess the problem or opportunity? Is it sales data, demographic data, product performance data, or another type of data?

 

The data that would address the requirement represents the care centers’ improvement needs in all Canadian Provinces. It relates to the care center and specific care pathway efficiencies observed. The professional experience of the MIHS team would be relevant and backed up with the rich product range and technologies available at the company level. We do not have a central data repository in Canada, like the CMS in the US, where demographic data should be available for consultation. However, the data is available at a provincial level in all Canadian geographical areas, given the care delivery’s regional governance. This type of information is to benchmark against the care center level’s performance data, or even at the care pathway level.

Explain why this type of data is needed for this particular problem or opportunity

 

Data is required to establish state-of-the-art care centers and care pathways to identify the significant problems encountered at the care center levels and help set the desired benchmark. Once the model is defined, it will contribute to identifying and further support the care center stakeholders (Davenport T.H. et al., 2013) to address the required tools for improvement, maintain the resulted state of the art, and additionally contribute further to improve the situation in their area of responsibility. From the MIHS team perspective, it is a quintessential set of information to design the best tools to deploy for the desired improvement and provide the opportunity to reach the best suitable expertise to transpose onto the local conditions.

 

How will you obtain this data?

 

The data collected at the provincial level is readily available from a demographic perspective and the care pathway perspective. Additionally, various consulting companies, Delloite (Delloite, 2020), McKinsey & Company (McKinsey & Co, 2020), Price Waterhouse Cooper (PWC, 2019), are providing readily accessible relevant data that reflect the status at the federal and provincial level. For a global benchmark against global data, OCED reports represent a rich and valuable data source. The local data essentially is the local care center records that could be consulted, with limitations and respect to the privacy regulation.

 

What is your hypothesis (prediction) of what the data will tell you?

 

State of the art in the healthcare sector is one of the most debated subjects at the provincial level, but more importantly at the federal level, given the reality of the patient experience in the Canadian health sector, and the desired improvement in the care centers and the care pathways. The hypothesis exuding in all reports is the real need for change and improvement at all levels, from the supply chain perspective and a care pathway perspective. The global experience accumulated at the MIHS unit level is the best suitable tool to address many initiatives proposed in the partnership opportunities that make the object of the team interest.

 

The professional partnership opportunities offered by the MIHS unit address needs for improvement in care centers. Consequently, the data sources to reference for information are mostly external ones but readily available. Despite the financial impact at the company level and the financial results accounted as a result in all business units, following the implemented improvement projects in various care centers, the MIHS team proposition focuses on the external partnerships with the care centers in their ultimate quest to improve the patient experience.
