This assignment will have you read an academic article (and a few parts of a second article), then respond to a few
questions about them. These 2 articles are posted in Canvas.
You will read the entire Waytz et al. (2010) article.
For the second article (Epley et al., 2007), you only need to read the highlighted parts on p. 866 and p. 880 of this article.
You’ll do this assignment completely on your own. The assignment will ask you to think of times when you engaged in
anthropomorphism and dehumanization in your thinking. To give you an idea of its detail, the final version of this
assignment will probably be about one full page, single-spaced (12 pt font). Format your file as single-spaced (12-pt font),
but please try to avoid making your assignment longer than 1½ pages.
The main Waytz et al. (2010) article discusses 3 factors that increase the likelihood of anthropomorphizing. For this
assignment, we’ll only focus on 2 of these factors: sociality motivation and effectance motivation.

What to include for the assignment:
1. Type your full name at the top of the page. NO other information is needed at the top of the page. After your name, just
start the first sentence of your first paragraph.

2. Define anthropomorphism in a few sentences, in your own words.

3. Describe a situation where (a) you anthropomorphized something due to a sociality motivation you had, and in a completely different situation, where (b) you anthropomorphized something (else) due to an effectance motivation you had. Put (a) and (b) into separate paragraphs.
Each situation may come from vivid memories of doing this one time, or it may be something you’ve done repeatedly, even habitually. When describing each situation, give at least one detail about how you anthropomorphized that thing (such as what characteristics you ascribed to it, or how you thought about it), and also explain why you think the anthropomorphism was caused by a sociality (or effectance) motivation—for example, what seemed to be the specific preexisting feeling or motive for you, in each case? One constraint for this assignment: Please do NOT give any examples where you anthropomorphized your pets, or anyone else’s pets for that matter.

4. Dehumanization is sometimes cited when explaining bad behaviors, but dehumanization of others does not necessarily lead to bad behavior or evil thoughts. In some situations, dehumanization may be a normal (and unavoidable) way of thinking about other people.

In your final paragraph for this assignment, define dehumanization in 1 or 2 sentences (in your own words). Then think of a time that you may have engaged in dehumanization when thinking about another person, in a way that was not necessarily bad—think of a “neutral” or relatively harmless example of this, a case that probably wouldn’t be judged as negative and that does not make you feel guilty when you reflect on it now. When describing this, give at least one detail about how you thought about that person, and why you may have been thinking that way (you do not need to refer to the specific types of “motivation” from the article here).

I’d suggest that you start by reading the entire article by Waytz et al. (2007), then read the highlighted parts of the Epley et al. (2010) article, which will help clarify the concepts. Again, everything should be written in your own words—no quoting from the article or from any other sources. There’s no need to give citations or references in your answers.
