The human Thoracic Cavity is composed of 24 ribs, 12 pairs.

The human Thoracic Cavity is composed of 24 ribs, 12 pairs.

The first seven pairs have origins at the Thoracic Vertebra 1-7 and attach directly to the sternum.

Rib pairs 8,9 and 10 have origins at Thoracic Vertebrae 8-10 and attach to the sternum and ribs above them by Costal cartilage.

Rib pairs 11 & 12 have their origin at Thoracic Vertebrae 11 & 12 but do not attach to the front of the thoracic cavity. These are often referred to as the floating ribs.
