John Smith is age 35 and good physical health except that he is in a state of “permanent unconsciousness” and cannot swallow; (2) he is fed by a PEG tube inserted when Smith was initially brought to the hospital in Georgia; (2) he previously made the election not to have “any medications, machines, or other procedures …” which would keep him alive but not cure him. This was unknown at the hospital when the PEG tube was inserted. His wife wants him kept alive. Medical and nursing personnel at the hospital where he is a patient believe that the PEG tube should be removed. How should the hospital handle the situation?
