Thank you for your insightful post! I agree with you; US health care costs are outrageously expensive, resulting in some Americans delaying or going without medical care due to cost reasons. Even with the US’s high healthcare cost, the US fails to achieve better healthcare outcomes. Thus, the US is behind most countries’ measures related to health outcome, quality, and efficiency (Davis et al., 2014). Additionally. The US lacks universal healthcare coverage but instead has a mixed public/private approach to healthcare, making it more of a business opportunity for capital gains. As a result, the uninsured meet with increased cost and access issues when seeking healthcare, the underinsured receive inadequate care, and healthcare provider does not accept subsidized government insurance (Medicaid coverage) (Bodenheimer & Grumbach, 2020).

Considering Universal Health Coverage, every country should have it. The World Health Organization (2020) defines universal healthcare as “ensuring that all people have access to needed health services (including prevention, promotion, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliation) of sufficient quality to be effective while also ensuring that the use of these services does not expose the user the financial hardship”. Countries with UHC provide access to individuals and communities with essential quality health services, health promotion to preventions, treatment, rehabilitation across the life span. As a result, UHC will protect individuals, especially those from low socioeconomic status, from the financial consequences of paying for health services out of pocket that can result in bankruptcy because of unexpected illness (Crowley et al., 2020).

Additionally, it will lead to a healthier population, which will mitigate the economic cost of an unhealthy nation ( Park et al., 2016). Nonetheless, I know the Patient Protection Affordable Care Act is imperfect but, hopefully, it will eventually lead to every citizen having universal healthcare coverage hence reducing barriers to care and building a sustainable healthcare system.
